Where household water actually goes. Toilets, showers and washing are the bulk of it, and almost all of it returns to the sewer within seconds of use.

Withdrawal versus consumption
Almost all indoor household water returns to the catchment through the sewer. Garden watering is the main genuinely consumptive household use.
Where savings actually are
Showers and toilets dominate. A shorter shower and an efficient toilet outperform every other household measure by a wide margin.
Supply pipe leaks
A leak on the customer-side pipe runs continuously and is invisible. It is a common cause of unexplained high metered bills.

The energy connection

Most household water is used hot, and heating it costs far more than the water itself. A typical shower costs a fraction of a penny in water and several pence in energy. Reducing hot water use therefore saves money mostly through the energy bill, not the water bill — which is worth knowing, because it changes which measures are worth the effort.

Should you get a meter?

As a rough guide, metering usually saves money where there are fewer people than bedrooms, and usually costs more where the reverse is true. Metering also reduces consumption by roughly 10–15% on its own, through the price signal — so the saving is often larger than a straight calculation suggests.
