Who actually uses water
Agriculture takes about 70% of global freshwater withdrawal. Households take under a tenth. Almost every popular water-saving conversation is about the smallest number.
Global freshwater withdrawal divides roughly 70% agriculture, 20% industry including energy, and 10% municipal supply. That split is the most important single fact about water use, and it is almost the inverse of where public attention goes.
A high agricultural share reflects the size and irrigation intensity of the farming sector rather than inefficiency. Countries at the top of any such ranking are typically food producers in arid regions.

Why household saving still matters
Household use is a small share of national withdrawal, but it is not therefore unimportant. It must be treated to drinking standard, it is delivered through the most expensive infrastructure per unit volume of any sector, it is concentrated in exactly the places and seasons where supply is tightest, and peak demand — not average demand — is what sizes a supply system.
Reducing household demand defers reservoir construction and reduces abstraction from stressed rivers and chalk streams. It is a legitimate and worthwhile intervention. It is simply not, and cannot be, the main lever on global water use.
Where the water in your day actually goes
Direct household use in the UK is around 140 litres per person per day. The water embedded in the food, clothes and goods a person consumes is roughly twenty to fifty times that, depending on diet. The largest water decision most people make is what they eat, not how long they shower — a point worth stating plainly, and also worth not overstating, because embedded water is mostly rainfall consumed by crops rather than water abstracted from a stressed river.
