Hard water and limescale
What hardness actually is, why it costs you money, why it has no health effect, and which of the many products sold to deal with it actually work.
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up from limestone and chalk. It is set by the geology under your area and cannot be changed by your water company. It is also the water property people notice most — in kettles, on shower screens, and in how much detergent it takes to get a lather.
Why heating causes it
Hard water contains calcium paired with bicarbonate. Heating decomposes the bicarbonate, releases carbon dioxide, and leaves calcium carbonate — which is not very soluble and comes out as solid scale on the hottest surface available.
That is why kettles, immersion heaters, boilers and shower heads scale while cold pipes generally do not. The scale in your kettle is, quite literally, the limestone the water dissolved on its way to you.
What it costs
- Scale on a heating element insulates it, so the appliance uses more energy for the same result
- Shortened life for kettles, washing machines, dishwashers and boilers
- More detergent and soap needed, because hardness reacts with them to form the scum that leaves tide marks
- Blocked shower heads and aerators
What actually works

These devices do not remove calcium or magnesium, so they do not soften water in the chemical sense — that much is not in dispute. The claim is that they alter crystal formation so scale does not adhere. Some laboratory studies report an effect on crystal morphology; independent field trials have largely failed to reproduce a consistent practical benefit. The honest position is that the evidence does not support the marketing, without asserting that no effect exists.
If you install a softener
Ion exchange softening swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium — roughly 46 mg/l of sodium for every 100 mg/l of hardness removed. In a very hard water area that is a meaningful addition, and it is why softened water is conventionally not plumbed to the kitchen drinking tap. Leave one hard tap for drinking and cooking.
Softer water is also more plumbosolvent, so in a property with lead pipework softening can increase lead pickup. That is a further reason to keep the drinking tap unsoftened.
