How it works

When flow exceeds the capacity the network can pass forward to treatment, excess spills over a weir into a receiving water. The design intent is dilution by rainfall; the failure mode is spilling in dry weather or at low rainfall, which indicates a network or capacity fault.

Trade-offs

  • Prevents internal sewer flooding, which is a serious public health hazard in itself

  • Event duration monitoring has made the scale of discharge visible for the first time, which is why reported spills rose as monitoring expanded
