What a gauge count measures: nine national monitoring networks compared
Hydrionis holds river gauges from nine jurisdictions, and the values per gauge differ by more than four hundred times between the deepest and the shallowest. Almost none of that difference is about how well the water is monitored. It is about how often each publisher reports, how much of its own archive it serves, and — for three of the nine — how long ago Hydrionis started accumulating a record the publisher itself does not keep. This note sets out what each number does and does not describe, because a table of network sizes is one of the easier things on this platform to read wrongly.

Why the last column is not a league table
Finland holds 15,391 values per gauge and Germany holds 35. The ratio is about 440 to one, and it is almost entirely an artefact of three things that have nothing to do with how either country manages its water.
How often the publisher reports. A daily archive accumulates twelve times faster than a monthly one and three hundred and sixty-five times faster than an annual one, at the same number of gauges over the same years. Four of these nine report daily, three monthly or annually.
How much of its own archive the publisher serves. Three of the nine keep only a rolling window and forget what falls out of it. For those, the record Hydrionis holds began when Hydrionis started accumulating, and says nothing whatever about how long the country has been gauging its rivers.
What Hydrionis chose to ingest. Where a publisher retains its archive and Hydrionis holds only part of it, that is a Hydrionis decision about bandwidth, and it is recorded on the source rather than left to look like a gap in the country’s monitoring.
