Tap water versus bottled water
A neutral comparison across regulation, composition, cost, safety and environmental impact. The differences are real, and mostly not the ones marketing emphasises.
Both are water. Beyond that they differ in how they are regulated, what they contain, what they cost and what they cost the environment. Hydrionis takes no position on which anyone should drink; the comparison below is intended to be usable in either direction.

On safety
On composition
This is the one genuine and consistent difference. Bottled mineral waters vary enormously — from Voss at around 44 mg/l total dissolved solids to Gerolsteiner at around 2,500 — and the label tells you exactly what is in each. Tap water composition is set by local geology and varies regionally, but is generally less extreme in either direction.
If you want water with a specific mineral profile — high calcium, high magnesium, very low sodium, high bicarbonate — bottled water lets you choose it and tap water does not. That is a real reason to prefer a particular bottled water, and it is different from a general claim of superiority.

Bottled water at typical supermarket prices costs on the order of three hundred times mains tap water per litre. At single-bottle convenience prices the multiple is commonly over a thousand.
Tap water figures vary by supplier and by whether the property is metered. The comparison is illustrative rather than a quotation for any particular household.
On environmental impact
Bottled water requires bottle manufacture, filling, transport and disposal or recycling. Life cycle assessments consistently find its impact per litre to be considerably higher than piped supply across most impact categories. Transport distance is a large part of it, which is why a locally sourced bottled water has a materially lower footprint than one shipped across the world.
The counter-argument — that bottled water displaces sugary drinks with a worse footprint still — is legitimate as far as it goes, but it is a comparison against soft drinks rather than against tap water.
