Notes

Authored by federal agencies, so public domain applies; the text NIFC attaches in place of a licence is a disclaimer rather than a grant, and it asks that the data be treated as strategic rather than authoritative for any particular fire — "not legal documents", and no better than the sources it was assembled from. Hydrionis uses only the year, the mapped area and the perimeter centroid, and derives from them the burned area within fifty kilometres of each of its own United States measurement points. Coverage ends in 2019: the layer answers queries for later years with a residue of records that would read as a collapse in American wildfire rather than as the end of a dataset, so collection stops where the coverage does. Perimeters from 2020 are published separately as WFIGS and are not yet held.

What Hydrionis holds from this publisher

The publisher’s own coverage is above. This is what Hydrionis has actually taken from it, at the subjects it measures — gauges, boreholes, reservoirs or places.

How current it is

Partial record held
NIFC offers more than Hydrionis currently holds. The newest value here covers 2019; the gap is a deliberate limit on what has been collected, not a limit on the source. The Interagency Fire Perimeter History layer covers 1984 to 2019; perimeters from 2020 are published separately as WFIGS and are not held. The layer answers queries for later years with a residue of records — 151 in 2020 against 3,217 in 2019 — which would read as a collapse in American wildfire rather than as the end of a dataset, so collection stops where the coverage does.
