Istituto Nazionale di Statistica is the government department or statistical office for Italy. It publishes the census of water for civil use, reporting abstraction, distribution input, water delivered to users, network losses and per-capita consumption for every Italian municipality and province.

Italy reports unusually high distribution network losses by European standards; ISTAT publishes them at municipal level, which makes it one of the few countries where leakage can be mapped below the utility.
