FAOSTAT — Production and Land Use domains
The world reference for national agricultural statistics: production, harvested area and yield for 278 crop and livestock products across 246 countries and territories from 1961, and a land-use domain covering twenty-one land categories and twenty-three irrigation and agricultural practice categories.

- Restrictions
- FAO adds terms beyond CC BY 4.0. Datasets may not be used for or in conjunction with the promotion of a commercial enterprise or its products or services, nor in any way suggesting FAO endorsement; commercial reuse is therefore recorded as unclear and withheld. FAO also warns that its databases may contain third-party data that may not be redistributable, with any such condition stated in the dataset metadata — the crop production and land use datasets Hydrionis holds carry no such note. Attribution must follow FAO’s prescribed citation format.

Notes
Hydrionis holds three elements for six water-relevant crops and two irrigated-area series, from two of the sixty-nine bulk datasets. Every FAOSTAT value carries a flag saying where it came from, and Hydrionis reads it: official and external figures are stored as reported, FAO estimates as estimated, and values imputed by a receiving agency are not stored at all, because collecting an upstream backfill is backfilling. FAO’s own regional and world aggregates, published in the same files under area codes at or above 5000, are not adopted. Countries resolve through the UN M49-to-ISO3 crosswalk rather than by name.
What Hydrionis holds from this publisher
The publisher’s own coverage is above. This is what Hydrionis has actually taken from it, at the subjects it measures — gauges, boreholes, reservoirs or places.

How current it is
- Partial record held
- FAO offers more than Hydrionis currently holds. The newest value here covers 2025; the gap is a deliberate limit on what has been collected, not a limit on the source. FAOSTAT publishes 278 crop and livestock products across 69 datasets. Hydrionis holds three elements for six crops chosen for their water relevance, plus two irrigated-area and eight land-cover series from the land-use domain. Livestock, trade, prices and emissions are deliberately not held. Of the 45 land-use items published, the eight taken are those that describe land cover with a bearing on the water balance; organic-certification, tillage, aquaculture and maritime-zone items are not held. Forest values exist in the file for every year from 1990 but are genuinely observed only at Global Forest Resources Assessment reference years, so the held series has six points across thirty-five years rather than thirty-six.FAOSTAT publishes 278 crop and livestock products across 69 datasets.
