What this looks like

One real series from the dataset, and real rows from the head of its published extract. Neither is a mock-up: the rows below are the same rows, unchanged, that are in the file you would download.

Nitric acid in air at Vincennes
The longest single series this dataset holds — 1,989 weekly values, one of 607. Drawn from 600 of them, evenly spaced across the record. The dataset is not this chart.

Methodology

Collected from the EPA CASTNET open data directory. Each value is a laboratory analysis of a filter exposed for one week at a rural site. The publisher flags every measurement and the flags are read rather than the file being treated as uniform: values flagged invalid, not analysed, or with failed flow carry no observation at all, while values below the detection limit are stored as censored observations carrying their threshold, because the number the publisher prints for them is the reporting limit rather than a measurement. Sites with fewer than 200 weekly samples are not held.

Permitted uses

Available to: Public, Developer, Research, Professional, Enterprise. These follow from the rights of the contributing publishers, not from a Hydrionis pricing decision — no access tier can widen what a publisher withheld.

Contributing sources

Attribution and citation

Cite and reuse →

Two different obligations, deliberately kept apart. One is a condition of somebody else's licence; the other is a request Hydrionis has no standing to enforce.

Suggested citation for Hydrionis

Hydrionis (2026), Rural Air Chemistry Dataset, version 1.0.0, accessed 2026-09-02, hydrionis.com/data/datasets/rural-air-chemistry/

Cite Hydrionis where you rely on the compilation, the normalisation, the eligibility judgements or a chart. Where you use an unmodified published value, the publisher’s attribution is the one that is required; crediting Hydrionis as well is welcome and is not something Hydrionis can require of you.

Recommended, not required. Hydrionis does not claim rights over unmodified public data it relayed, and doing arithmetic on somebody else’s measurements does not make them Hydrionis’s. Cite the version and the access date: Rural Air Chemistry Dataset changes as publishers release and as methods are revised, and a citation without both cannot be checked later. Full guidance is on cite and reuse.

None of the contributing licences requires attribution. Crediting the publishers is still good practice and they are listed above.

First release.

Additions

  • Five measured air species at United States rural sites, from 1987.

About this data

The fields a professional user needs to judge whether this is fit for a particular purpose. Deliberately not a score.

About this data

Everything below is a property of the data rather than a rating of it. There is deliberately no single confidence score: how much a gap matters depends on what you are about to do with the series, and only you know that.

Known gaps
  • An air concentration is not a water concentration. Micrograms per cubic metre of air is a different quantity in a different medium from milligrams per litre of water, and the path between them runs through deposition, rainfall, soil and geology, none of which is held here.
  • Weeks below the detection limit are held as censored observations rather than as values or gaps: the point carries the operator, the threshold and the kind of limit, and has no exact value because none was measured. This affects 3.2% of nitrate weeks, 1.3% of sulphur dioxide weeks and under 1% of the rest. A statistic computed over them must declare how it treats them; Hydrionis does not substitute the limit, half the limit, or zero.
  • A weekly average of the air passing one place. Not a peak, not an instantaneous reading, and not what anyone breathes: CASTNET sites are deliberately rural and sited away from local sources to represent regional air.
ContinuityVersion 1.0.0, released 2026-08-28. 1 recorded version; breaking changes and corrections are listed in the changelog above.
